RT Rybak is not running for reelection as Minneapolis mayor, so there's been a scramble to replace him with lots of candidates declaring. So far there are multiple Democrats and one Republican.

The Democrats consist of a perennial candidate, a bunch of City Council members, a former Hennepin County Commission member and former City Council President who is now a lobbyist. I probably don't need to explain why I don't like the lobbyist, and I don't really like the Minneapolis City Council that much (too bureaucratic and out of touch with the city is the cliff's notes version as to why.) Also all the candidates just seem to be throwing around empty platitudes about "neighborhood revitalization", "supporting small businesses", etc. etc.

The Republican on the other hand is a guy with a surprisingly progressive record. He worked for awhile with a business that specialized in renewable energy technology and won some good cases at a Minneapolis law firm, like getting more compensation for victims of the I-35W bridge collapse. He also so far seems to have actual ideas.

I haven't really decided yet who I am first preferencing (remember we have three votes now, IRV), but I am actually considering him. Note though that he's also saying that he will not seek the Republican Party's endorsement, or any party for that matter and will decline any party's endorsement if offered.

Actually part of the reason I will for sure not vote for one of the City Council members is I have a feeling he might end up as a Bloomberg-style nanny statist and propose silly legislation like that instead of anything important or useful.

I can't respond to this since there's no poll question.

Are the Greens running anybody? They have a seat or two on the city council IIRC, and if it's IRV then i'd probably 1st pref them in this situation.

They have one seat on the City Council, though he's basically a GINO, he's not the furthest left member on the council or in any way notably different from the Democrats and is a bit of an anti-college student asshole. My dislike of the Greens is well known. Their candidate in 2009 was a complete joke who didn't have any business running for any political office. Like I was better qualified.

The elections are officially non-partisan though, the parties just "endorse" candidates. Before 2009 the runoffs would just be Democrat vs. Democrat. The endorsement doesn't really usually mean a whole lot either.

For the record I also found out this Republican candidate supports gay marriage, though that doesn't really mean anything in Minneapolis.
