Any one who focuses on the water grab is part of the problem in politics- we need to focus less on style then substance. Sadly, there didn't seem to be much substance in Rubio's speech...

I agree, but I'm going to be honest, I was amused.

The problem with Rubio's speech was that he offered nothing new. He went to lengths describing how he (personally) wasn't Mitt Romney...not rich priveledged, etc. Then he went on to articlate essentially the same exact set of solutions as proposed by Mitt Romney (with the exception of immigration). I think this is the fundamental problem with the GOP. They think that the Mitt Romney message was a winner but the messenger was a loser and you can just repackage the same stuff with a new face and everything will be OK.

Do responders get a copy of the actual speech they are responding to in advance?  Almost nothing Rubio said actually responded to the points the President made.  It was just a re-wash of the Romney campaign.

The Republicans are in quite a pickle, aren't they? If they moderate on matters of money, there's no point in carrying on at all.

I don't think they see it that way. Romney ran one of the worst campaigns in recent memory, and basically proved everybody's beliefs about him when he said the 47 percent comment.

That is exactly my point. The new GOP seems to believe that they dont need any new ideas or new policies for 2016, just a different messenger. As Joe Scarborough noted this morning, that speech could have been given by him back in 1994. Its the same old 'big government bad's stuff.
http://www.nbcnews.com/id/3036789/ns/msnbc-morning_joe/#50793463

It also seemed to be ignoring the advice of GOP message man Frank Luntz who recently tried to advise the GOP to move away from the message of fighting 'big government'
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/frank-luntz-to-gop-the-american-people-dont-care-what-the-size-of-government-is/

And of course nowhere has Obama or the Dems even touted 'big government' In fact government has shrunk under Obama in terms of personnel. And discretionary spending as a % of GDP has shrunk too. Rubio is fighting a boogeyman strawman that no one cares about and one that doesn't even exist. On the other hand Obama is talking about stuff people care about like pre-school and universal background checks.

The GOP candidate in 2016 needs a bigger idea than 'cut taxes, cut spending, cut regulation'

As for the speech, quite good IMO. Water will become the BFD, just like Kaine's eyebrows and Daniels' pessimism, etc. The nitpick brigade is out in full force.

Watergate.

I've always thought Rubio sounded very nervous every time I've heard him speak.

You remember Kaine's eyebrows and Daniels' pessimism.  What else do you remember about their speeches?

Rubio's PAC is now capitalizing on the water sip by selling water bottles:
