The top Democratic candidates are from the Northeastern region: Hillary Clinton (I'll count this as her region), Joe Biden and Andrew Cuomo. Deval Patrick and Elizabeth Warren have the potential to be top-tier contenders, especially with their proximity to New Hampshire. A win there would turn Patrick into a strong frontrunner for the South Carolina primary, or Warren into the choice for Democrats who think it's time that a woman was nominated.

Republicans are all over the map.

Chris Christie, a top-tier candidate, is from the Northeast. As is Kelly Ayotte, who could be a strong contender.

Paul Ryan, another top-tier candidate is from the Midwest. As are Scott Walker and John Thune. Of the top-tier candidates, Ryan is the only one who neighbors an early primary state, although that didn't help Pawlenty.

There are a handful of westerners with a small chance at the nomination, especially Martinez and Huntsman.

But the South wins this one. Either Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio will be a top-tier candidate. Rand Paul will also have a shot. I wouldn't want to underestimate Mike Huckabee either.

I'll make a semi-bold prediction: The Democratic nominee will come from the state of New York.

I think the Dem nominee will be a Northeasterner too. What I wonder is if the Dem base will want a severe fiscal moderate like Cuomo. Else I could also see O'Malley getting it because IIRC he doesn't have too many enemies in either wing.

I can't imagine O'Malley as the nominee.. I just can't. He screams Pawlenty to me.

At this stage I would say either Rand Paul or Chris Christie for the nomination. And if Hillz doesn't run it'll be Cuomo.

Northeastern Democrat (Clinton/Cuomo/Warren) and Southern Republican (Rubio/Jindal/Perry) seem to be the likeliest combinations.

I always thought it was the same region as Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

There was all the talk a few years back about how Obama/ Biden was the first time in generations that Democrats won the White House without a Southerner on the ticket.

Ideally Western Republican (Jon Huntsman) vs. Northeastern Democrat (Hillary Clinton or Andrew Cuomo, possibly Kirsten Gillibrand).
