While many had called on Vice President Frederick Douglass to seek the Presidency following President Woodhull's announcement that she wouldn't be running for re-election, Douglass who remained a Republican refused to run either as an independent or as a member of his party. Nevertheless, he attended the Republican National Convention and watched the vying for the nomination unfold...

The main issues dominating the convention would be currency, civil service, the treatment of southern delegations, and suffrage which was an issue President Woodhull had pressed during her term but had failed to pass (While Woodhull believed women had the right to vote, she wanted a constitutional amendment affirming it but failed to have it pass).

I'm establishing Postmaster General Bristow of Kentucky as the "I'm too lazy to research any of these candidates and I want this election to be amusing so why the hell not" candidate.

Hayes probably would have been good without the corrupt bargain.

I'm establishing Postmaster General Bristow of Kentucky as the "I'm too lazy to research any of these candidates and I want this election to be amusing so why the hell not" candidate.

It turns out that Bristow was actually Solicitor General and played a major role in prosecuting the Klan and giving African-Americans the right to testify before juries, as well as prosecuting the Whiskey Ring.

A real shame about that, otherwise he probably would have been my first choice. I went with Bristow.
