City Council speaker Christine Quinn is the frontrunner to replace departing mayor Bloomberg, however she likely will have several significant opponents in the Democratic primary (De Blasio, Liu) and in the general (Lhota). Is an upset a realistic possibility?

We already have a thread on this. Maybe it can be merged. However, since it is stated here I'll ask here: who is Lhota? I find it very hard to believe that a Republican (or Independent) could stop the eventual Dem nominee. That streak is ending. Then again, I'm not some NYC political buff so please fill me in on why this could be competitive.

Former MTA Chairman Joe Lhota, who is Rudy Giuliani's choice, is also my choice and probably the GOP front-runner.
