(I couldn't find a thread for this subject).

Latest result, Proposition 34, (Abolishing Death Penalty in California):
Yes: 5,302,892 (47.7%)
No: 5,810,448 (52.3%)

No is leading by 507,556 votes.

There are still 1,722,249 ballots to be processed in California. If they split 65/35 in favour of the proposition, the final result would be very close. Most of the votes still to come are from counties which voted Yes to the proposition.

This doesn't have a chance at all. The numbers won't move much from where they are currently.

Yes, don't be too optimistic. The outcome was decided two weeks ago. We've seen this song and dance before with prop 8, 19, and many others.

Yeah, there is an odd socially-conservative majority of around 52-53% on initiatives such as these. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. However, unlike the others, this one cannot be blamed solely on Southern California. It didn't do anywhere near as well as it had to in the Bay Area to win. Disappointing as this result may be, it is somewhat impressive to think that about 48% of the state voted to abolish the death penalty.

I was really hoping this would pass.

Oregon was considering repeal too: Kitzhaber is opposed and instituted a moratorium in 2011 with the idea the 2013 legislature would pursue some type of reform including possibly referring a repeal to the voters (necessary because the reinstatement of the OR death penalty in the 1980s was through a state constitutional amendment and any change to the state constitution has to be approved by voters). I don't think the legislature will consider an abolition referendum now.

Could have potentially been two more states to do away with it...

2003: Elects Arnold Schwarzenegger Governor.
2008: Bans gay marriage
2010: Votes against cannabis legalization.
2012: Upholds death penalty.
2014: Elects Gavin Newson as Governor?

Arizona is the GOP's joke state, California is the Democrat's.

To be fair, cannabis is effectively legal here even despite the 2010 vote. All you need to do to smoke it "legally" is pay a speed-reading doctor $40 for a license.

And possession is an infraction now, and since you don't have to attend traffic school, less of a hassle than a speeding ticket. Prop 19 would have made it a crime with possible jail time for those 18-20 years old who got charged with possession.
