Clearly the issue with Spanish speaking is something to deal with for pollsters and it is related to the IVR thing in that they are even more likely to be cellphone only. So one of Obama's strongest demographics are essentially not being polled. What pollsters are doing is taking the very few Latino land line users and extrapolating them to represent all Latinos. That is why polling in CO, NM and NV usually underestimates Ds. But the live polling probably isn't any better as they also dont seem to have Spanish as an option even if they are getting to cell phones. So the Spanish language thing is probably not the reason (or the whole reason) Romney does better with automated polling.

Um... Apparently Wink is the international symbol for, I'm going to say something prattish, but then pretend it's good natured.

More like the symbol for I'll meet your biased hackery with something equally redundant. Wink

But what he was saying wasn't hackery - he was stating an anecdote which reflects a point, then you went all hyper-partisan. Just because someone is politically involved doesn't mean they're instantly incapable of impartiality. I don't think I could look at myself if I was like that... It sounds horrible.

Yes it was, completely so. Registering a few voters in one county has zero to do with the larger implications of a significant # of potential voters who have a difficult time being immersed in American ideas, media, and culture, all of which point to diminished turnout at election time. Show me serious #s of non-English speakers and their likelihood to vote and you may satiate my desire for hard truth (as opposed to soft anecdotes)

One thing that I have noticed with Puerto Ricans is that most that grew up in Puerto Rico speak Spanish far better than they speak English, but their children speak English fluently (even if they speak Spanish fluently).  Now Puerto Ricans are obviously citizens and can vote, if the live in a state or DC.

I'm just wondering how big an issue this is in the South West.

And yes, Obama underpolled in that region.

People still have landlines? Do they put them next to the 8 track and the typewriter?

Yes, and given the hit or miss cell phone reception here. I'd be crazy not to.  I even have a telephone I can actually dial instead of pressing buttons.  It works and as a piece of Western Electric craftsmanship it likely will continue working long after I'm dead.  How many cell phones are you likely to shell out for in the same time frame?

I love the old dial phones!  I had one (medium green with a butterfly in the middle of the rotor) that was  handed down to me by my parents, which I used until leaving the Bad Place.  They'd used it since the 1960s, it worked fine for me (and had the loudest ringer imaginable), but I fear that since then my terrible sibling has probably thrown it away.  Ah, the destroyers.

It makes sense that robocalls would favour Romney.
