The minute that any one of the following states are called for Obama, it will mean that Obama will win the election:

If its called for Obama - Romney's chances are on life support.

If its called for Romney - Obama's chances just took a serious wound.

He asked if it's called early. If it's called early, it's clearly over.

We'll know early Romney wins (the writing is already on the wall), the media may try to delay announcing, you guys may take a week later to admit it.

No.  It won't be over until we at least know Ohio.

Like I said, stay in AR and oh yeah, go to school.

The Old Dominion is a slow-counting state and thus, it's unlikely it's called early.  Since it will likely be closer than 2008 and since the demographic shifts make it tough to model, don't be shocked if it's not called until at least 80% are in.

Virginia called for Obama early leaves rather little doubt that Obama's won. It's not absolutely over until we reach the West unless Florida or North Carolina is called for O, however.  If it's called for Romney early, then he is likelier than not to win the election but it's not quite as significant as it would be if it were called early for Obama.

Cliffy, I like you, but you're not helping to dispel the "election is over" nonsense and are sounding just as bad as the Democratic hacks.

I've said this before, but the only thing we know right now is that from tomorrow we have 11 days.  That's it.  We know nothing else.

If it is early for Obama he has won the election and if it is early for Romney at the very least it is going to be a long night before we know who wins.

Virginia counts slowly. It wasn't projected in 08 until after Obama had won, and it certainly won't be won by him by 6% this time around. We will likely wake up with Virginia still undecided.

Not quite.  There is a reasonable scenario with Romney losing Virginia and yet winning the election.  As for the other three, yeah, it would take a fairly unexpected scenario for Romney to win while losing any of the other three.

Romney 272-266

As for the question in the OP, if Virginia is called early for Obama, I expect he'll do better than the above map, but a later call would make this possible.

Based on my data, I'd stick a fork in Romney if Obama wins Virginia. If it's close (e.g. margin is within 1%), Romney still has a chance but would be roughly a 3-1 underdog.

Wasn't VA called before 10 in 2008?

VA is never called early because they ALWAYS tally Northern VA votes last for some reason.   Happened in 2004, 2006 (where Jim Webb pulled that dramatic last-minute victory over Allen), and in 2008.

FYI: as a Fairfax native currently living and working in Germany, I received my ballot several weeks ago.  +1 Obama +1 Kaine.  Smiley

Either way, Id say so.  If its called early for Obama, he has almost certainly won and if its called early for Romney, it means that undecideds are going heavily in his favor, meaning he will probably win Ohio too.

Actually CNN called it just a couple of minutes before 11pm.

Basically. If Obama outperforms Obama's national share they will still hold out on calling the state at least until after the 8pm states call. In 2008, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania were called without hesitation which to me was the indicator it was going to be a blowout. In 2004 of course New Hampshire wasn't called until the morning.

What we may find is a heap of states being called at once. Colorado and Nevada weren't called until just before midnight EST last time at which point Obama had already won. If Ohio takes as long as that to count and isn't announced until after polls close in California etc we might see Nevada, Colorado and Ohio declare around the same time.
