It happens.

A client at the law firm where I work was attacked by a dog. She missed several days of work due to her injuries and the small business she was working at fired her (and refused to give her references out of spite, making it harder for her to find a job). She can't get unemployment benefits or COBRA because her former employer refuses to cooperate and fill out the appropriate forms. So she has resorted to using credit cards to pay for her food and rent, in hopes that she will be getting some kind of settlement from the dog owner's home insurance. If she doesn't, she may well end up homeless (and her kids too).
