A few comparisons:

- one could argue that this is like the early 1970s with a mediocre economy and an incumbent president who is supposed to be the embodiment of a new coalition (for Nixon it was the Kevin Phillips majority and for Obama it was the Judis/Tuxeira majority.) Although Obama wouldn't win by as much as Nixon, they both had/will have modest coattails with a backlash on the horizon.

- Going even further back this could be like the Gilded Age where the country is very partisan and it is hard to get voters to vote differently. The U.S. seems to be in a constant state of gridlock and divided government.

Obama already had his backlash in 2010.  The fact that Republicans will likely control the House will make his second term much more difficult to produce a backlash since he wont be able to pass many unpopular policies.  It was Obamacare that woke the right up.
