They do to me... But I guess I am not in the mainstream on this one.

To the general public? No. But they should matter.

To an extent, but for the purpose of this poll, I'd say no because I think most voters don't pay much attention to them.

I do agree with the above comments about how they should matter/matter to me. I've always liked reading them to get ideas and a sense of what a party wants to do or where it (ideally) stands on the issues.

They can make you pretty depressed at the opportunity cost of the money-backed, two-party system. The Greens' last platform was really nice and thorough/specific and virtually none of it was implemented.

Politically/electorally speaking, platforms do not matter nearly as much as the general messaging of a campaign. Romney is the "conservative", Obama is the "progressive". Neither of those words means anything anymore, outside of what the voting populace believes they mean.

Usually not. However this year the GOP platform is getting more scrutiny in the media, which may also lead to the Dem platform getting a closer look.

They should but sadly they do not.  Most voters back their politicians they way they back their sports teams.

No, though the Republicans are clearly aiming their platform at evangelicals (everything the media is talking about) and Paulites (audit the Fed, "gold commission") to get them behind a candidate those groups don't necessarily like.

The gist of each party's political platform:

"We are awesome, they suck."

More like "we want to do awesome things and those f[inks]ers don't" but yeah, almost meaningless.

American politics is driven by individual personalities. The prevalence of ticket splitting is evidence of this. Since this is not a parliamentary system the public views the platforms of the positions of the base at best. They only associate the platform with a candidate if the candidate wants it to be so.

No, which is unfortunate.
