Paul Ryan is the first person on a ticket from Generation X, that being born between 1965 and 1980. This was the generation that came of age during the Reagan Administration and was more conservative than the baby boomers (1945-1965) before it, or the Millennium Generation (1980-2000) after it. Does Paul Ryan personify that "Alex P. Keaton" character from Family Ties? For those that are too young, that character was a young man who was already economically conservative at a young age, simply because he was rebelling against his liberal parents.

Is the cultural reference too old?

It is too old, but I've heard of the show and seen a few clips.

Alex is the quintessential parody of a conservative of that era, Ryan probably personifies that more than a lot of others would.

Those of us who have actually watched the show can attest to the fact that Alex P. Keaton had a huge heart, a brain to match it, and always ended up doing the right thing in the end. Being compared to him is a good thing.

Also, whatever happened to good family sitcoms like Family Ties and The Cosby Show?

Both shows premiered before October 9, 1986 when Fox Broadcasting started their network.  Coincidence? You decide.
