I'm guessing somewhere late in Option 3 or Option 4.

I chose Option 3.

Is it weird that I hardly have any interest at all in who his running mate will be?

It's only interesting if he picks someone from a swing state or not.

As for the question: July

Romney definitely won't be announcing his choice during the Olympics (27 July to 12 August 2012) unless it's an an outside-the-box choice who happens to be a former Olympian.

No, I don't think I care either.  Unfortunately he will know better than to pick someone highly entertaining (like Sarah Palin).

So, Lance Armstrong then?

(Won bronze at the 2000 Olympics and at one time he considered running for governor of Texas, supposedly as a Republican. Tongue )

In that case, it will probably be before the Olympics or just after.  But I don't think the Olympics will be an issue if he picks someone relatively boring like Portman who won't get much of a bounce.

The real key issue is fundraising.  If he get get maximum dollars for 4 weeks in August, then he should announce Portman earlier.

Kerry made a mistake in timing (July 6) and in selection (edwards) so that hurt him.  It was a desperate move in both instances.  If he chose gephardt, he wouldn't feel the need to announce so early to drum up excitement.  The announcement early also allowed Bush more time to attack both of them for perceived weakness on national security.

And it's happened once again
I'll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
Sees through the master plan

But everybody's gone
And I've been here for too long
To face this on my own
Well I guess this is growing up

The Republican Party will not stray beyond bland, conventional running mates for at least two more elections after this one. Thanks, Sarah.

Just after the DNC.  Remember, McCain did the same thing to avoid a post-convention bump from Obama in 08, and Mitt will likely try the same strategy if all goes according to plan

I used to be skeptical of the idea that he'd announce early, but I've changed my mind.  I think it's now more likely that the announcement will come in July.  Particularly if the pick is going to be someone boring, who's not likely to give him much of a bounce anyway, he might as well name the person early, and get them to work on fundraising and campaigning.

Of course, it depends on how long the vetting takes.

Just you see! Christine O'Donnell will be VP because he needs a Southerner and a gal to balance the ticket.

Delaware is not Southern, I don't care who you are.  The entire state is basically Southern Philadelphia, Eastern Baltimore, and just maybe Northern Virginia Beach.

Joe Biden, the ultimate Delawaran, might take issue with this:

Reactionary Party Convention. There is little recent precedent for nominating a Veep before then. Someone who has not yet won might during a contested Convention, but that is risky.
