I guess it's time I let you know.

So, as I had told you a while ago, I will spend my next academic year as an exchange student in an American university. Now, I can tell you that I have been admitted to the University of San Francisco ! Cheesy It's a small Jesuit college (5000 undergraduates), right in the middle of the city, and apparently a pretty good one.

I went to the embassy yesterday, and today I already received my official visa. That means I'm now basically assured to spend my next year there.

Let me tell you how proud I am to be given this occasion, and how especially overjoyed I am to have the opportunity to live in SF. I'm sure this will be a great year and look forward to broaden my horizons, to discover everything about the American way of life, the campus life, and the marvels of the region. Even though it might be a troubling experience (I'm not used to be so far from home for so much time) I'm sure it will be worth it. Also, I hope I can take advantage of the occasion to meet some Atlas posters who live in the region (I think Xahar is near SF for example).

That's awesome! San Francisco's my favorite place in the world; I'm sure you'll like it a lot. The USF campus is very nice, and the location is good. I live about 50 miles south of San Francisco (the map is on my profile page, of course), so I'm not very far at all, although I am going to Maryland for college. Tell me when you're arriving; if it's not before I leave for school, we can definitely meet up sometime around Thanksgiving.

Some advice:

1. Don't go to the Tenderloin alone late at night. It's a common mistake; the campus is right next to the Tenderloin. Avoid it. You should be safe elsewhere in San Francisco, since I assume you won't have any reason to be near Hunters Point at night.
2. Bring several jackets and sweaters. San Francisco is surrounded by water on three sides, so it's cold all year. The only difference between the seasons is that it rains in winter and it's dry in the summer. You might think that it'll get warmer, but it never will, so dress warmly.
3. Bear in mind that San Francisco is full of microclimates thanks to its unique geography. The Financial District, for instance, tends to be relatively warm, but the Sunset is basically Alaska: constantly cold and fog-bound.

If you ever have any questions or you're lacking for places to go, contact me and I'd be happy to help.

Yeah, I remember noticing you lived closer to SF a while ago. It's a pity you're going in Maryland just this year, but we will certainly manage meet in some way. Smiley I'm flying to SF on august 13 (classes begin on 21), so hopefully we should have some time.

It's really so cold ? SF might not be really South, but I would have expected it to be warmer than that. Meh, too bad. I guess I'll try to stay in the warmer places. Tongue Still I'm pretty sure I will love the city.

Thank you for your advice, and see you soon ! Smiley

If you're arriving in the middle of August, that's excellent; I don't think I'll be leaving until about a week after that. We can meet then; I'm looking forward to it.

Don't get me wrong about the weather; San Francisco is warmer than Paris, as the charts below should show. The weather is just the same all year, meaning that summer in San Francisco is colder than any other major city in America. San Francisco is certainly quite a bit cooler than where I live, but it won't ever snow, so you don't have to worry about that.

Ah, I see. Warmer on winter, roughly equal on summer. This is actually quite fine to me. Smiley

Looking forward to meeting.

BTW, the classes I have registered to for next semester :

Introduction to Comparative Politics
Introduction to Political Theory
Early Modern American Political Thought
Sp Top: Decision 2012

It's a pity you're going in Maryland just this year

I beg to differ! Cheesy

Incidentally, yeah, as Xahar noted, it's warmer than he might've given you the impression about... he's been absolutely spoiled temperature-wise, and will probably consider Maryland winters cold (whereas I'll find them utterly balmy).  He's right though that summers are relatively cool compared to a lot of the rest of the US.

You should have a lovely time, methinks.  Congratulations! Grin

Hey congratulations!

And oh man, that San Francisco climate looks awesome. It's the perfect temperature all year round! (Unlike here where temperatures range from -30 to 90F/-34 to 32C)
