This is only true because people don't know anything about Rick Santorum. He's Generic Republican, for the moment. That won't last, of course.

After underestimating him last Tuesday, PPP seems to have gone overboard on the whole Santorum thing. It's seeping all over the place.

Let's put it this way. Romney has a better chance of winning the election, Santorum has basically none. But Santorum has a pretty high floor since he will do well with certain types of voters. Santorum just won't be able to do well with the voters needed to win elections, while Romney has a chance to do so.

Yes, while it's true that the public isn't as familiar with Santorum, I think his negatives are overstated and the public at large hasn't gotten the strongest dose of Romney yet either. Quite frankly, I think voters are more likely to put up with the stereotype that Santorum embodies (as long as he isn't as visibly angry as he was in some debates months ago) than they are likely to put up with Romney's stereotype.

Yeah, one point below 50% is deadly territory.

Santorum hasn't been vetted and I suspect he'll suffer the more his views are known.  He'll do better than Mitt with blue collar males and worse among women who don't go to mass every day.  The latter is the bigger demographic.
