Rick Perry, though I don't quite get why Newt Gingrich collapsed.

Exactly. When Gingrich surged everyone with any level of political memory was dumbfounded as to how such an insider with tons of baggage could be appealing to the anti-Washington mood of 2011 GOP politics. The answer was that they either had forgotten or were unaware of how he was and were just reacting to his 2011 debate performances. His support was never real to begin with.

It was just another example of how badly the base want someone besides Romney. And the Santorum boomlet only reinforces that

I think Perry didn't really want to run for President, but was successfully lured by a strong draft campaign.

Fred Thompson comes to mind. He was a very strong candidate on paper as well, but never really engaged himself in the process. Of course his draft movement was weak when compared to Perry's fan and he failed because of being invisible. Perry was very visible and... well, that was the whole problem.

For those who say Santorum, you must remember he was hardly considered as "serious" and even now, while experiencing some growth, it's probably too late (sorry, Phil).
