It looks like a showdown between him and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling for the GOP nod:

Cuccinelli will announce governor’s run within days, GOP sources say

By Anita Kumar, Updated: Wednesday, November 30, 8:06 PM

RICHMOND — Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R) will reveal his plans next week to run for governor in 2013, according to well-placed Republican sources.

Cuccinelli, a tea party hero who garnered national attention for suing the federal government over the new health-care law, expects to make a formal announcement after the legislative session in the spring, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could speak freely about his plans.

For months, the former state senator from Fairfax County had said he was considering running for reelection or against Sen. Mark R. Warner (D) in 2014. But in recent weeks, speculation had turned to a run for governor, possibly setting up a primary race against Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R).

Bolling, a conservative who has campaigned on kitchen-table issues, has the endorsement of Virginia’s popular governor, Robert F. McDonnell (R). In Virginia, governors cannot seek consecutive terms.

I think we will already know the outcome of the general as of Nov. 7, 2012 if VA history is any guide.

Depends on who's President.

That's why we'll know after the 2012 election.

Okay, I'm convinced - time to get rid of the term limit.

Well, you can't run for President as an Attorney General.

McDonnell, like every Virginia governor before him, will run for Senate. Him vs. Warner will be interesting.

or at least allow 2 terms. I heard Virginians were trying to change this for McDonnell. Is this true at all or is Virginia going to keep this insane rule forever?

I haven't heard anything to that effect, but it requires a constitutional amendment, which would involve passing the bill through the general assembly twice over two years, then having a public vote on it, so the earliest it could be approved by the voters is November of 2013. They don't have enough time to make McDonnell eligible for a second term.

Heh, a day after I say that, it turns out Democrats want to change the one-term limit.

Probably because they're out of state-wide candidates and they need more stability for the next century. It does just become a game of "who's bench runs out first"

McDonnell will run for Senate only if 2014 is a very big wave year to Republicans. Virginians love senator Warner. Maybe if he doesn't get Presidency in 2016, in 2018, against senator Kaine.
