Yes, and I said what I said for the reasons that Nix gave in his last paragraph.

It makes little sense to me. It's like someone saying they don't believe in god, but they don't wanna go to hell over it.

Weird thread about a weird article. So... basically... I would say that there's absolutely nothing wrong in someone approaching Christianity as a set of traditions and values (as, to be blunt, most of us do in various combinations) and trying to follow them in some way or other, even if they lack religious belief. It's also a very common practice, of course.

But arguing that the logical conclusion of Christian theology (however defined) is some form of atheism with Christ merely as a symbol of possible human goodness... hmm... actually that seems a little bit silly. Especially as only the terminally dogmatic have a serious problem with the approach I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

I've always understood Christian Atheism to basically mean what you said in your first paragraph.  No belief in God, but generally following Judeo-Christian morality (and removing those tenants found to be personally distasteful).  I think most atheists and agnostics live this way whether they have thought it through or not - morality as a combination of Christian tradition and popular Zeitgeist.

As for people who actively refer to themselves as Christian Atheists, I believe they have looked at other moral frameworks and found they can logically lead to some really wacky and/or horrific conclusions about what is and is not moral.
