but because there isn't a lot of traffic I'll post it here. I was reading up on the cold war era and you had the John Birchers and people like Billy James Hargis on the airwaves. I was thinking that if I was alive back then I would have probably would have gone into showbusiness and created a show like SNL or Colbert to mock the red-baiters.

But then it got me to thinking: was the counterculture during the Johnson and Nixon years largely a reaction to the cold warrior staunch anticommunism attitude of the 50s and early 60s?

Not it was a bunch of bored, middle class, suburban white kids who formed the counter culture for fun. My dad was into the hippy stuff, and he voted for Nixon in '72 (it was secret of course).  Just ask my dad, and every other ex hippy. They were in it for fun. And do I blame them, the music was awesome Smiley
