It's a bit strange that the first person to air a negative TV ad against Perry is.....Ron Paul:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/62677.html

Here's the ad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUHlIPJTMIg&feature=player_embedded

I can't remember any previous presidential primary election cycle in which the negative TV ads were starting this early.  In 2008, Clinton and Obama didn't even air any ads attacking each other until after Super Tuesday(!).  On the GOP side, it had started in like November or December.

I dont think its that strange that Paul is going after Perry since Perry is the main threat to take away the support Paul has been getting.    Recent polls are showing Paul slipping back below 10% -- people are switching from him to Perry; Paul is getting anxious so he goes on the attack.

Having to go back over 20 years for something to attack Perry is sort of weak.

Oh yes, Al Gore was such an extreme liberal in 1988 Roll Eyes

Paul has also opened himself up to a counter attack.  In this ad he claims to have stood with Reagan, the same Reagan that Paul called a failure.   I expect his 1987 resignation letter from the Republican Party  to come up at some point.

Would an attack ad against Ron Paul from Perry be a bad thing for his campaign though? You know, Perry not attacking Romney, but Paul, would probably be news worthy. Generally you don't engage "fringe" candidates...

Al Gore's cheerleader. That's funny.

Because Rick Perry was indeed a cheerleader once in school.

Do you think this was intentional or not ?

The Reagan-to-Gore background music transition has got to be one of the least subtle of all time.

A Bachmann Super PAC has a Perry attack ad saying he isn't the real tea party conservative (and Bachmann is):
http://youtu.be/KxyVMi-eOeA

I think it is funny that Perry is being attacked for not being conservative enough and for being too much of an extreme conservative.

So let me get this straight:

Rick Perry isn't a true conservative because he worked for Al Gore in 1988. Ron Paul, on the other hand, stood with Ronald Reagan by....joining the Libertarian Party and running against the incumbent VP of the Reagan administration? Hmmm...

Intellectual dishonesty from Ron Paul? With whom do we rest our hopes, dreams, and futures upon now?

Liberal Democrat Al Gore... sadly this ad will be effective, but not for Paul.

Anybody able to confirm whether or not Perry supported Mondale in '84? You would think that would really hurt him among the GOP base...

I doubt this ad is going to help Paul, but I suspect it is going to hurt Perry.

Walter Mondale name doesn't hurt as much as Al Gore and Hilary Clinton are tide with Rick Perry since I don't think the GOP base really really hates him like they do Gore and Clinton

Also, Paul is a Texan like Perry, and from what I have heard rather dislikes him. He has all the more reason to get aggressive.

I don't mind the ad, but IMO Paul should have stayed out of it. Let Bachmann and Romney bash Perry while Paul keeps putting out ads extolling his conservative record or whatever. I guess the campaign's hoping to be seen as aggressive by being one of the first candidates to attack Perry. And if Perry responds, it sets up a Paul V Perry fight, which only helps Paul and hurts Perry.

Still, I think Paul should be more Tortoise and less Hare.

I don't think Paul has much choice.  If he becomes a tortoise, the media will write off his campaign.  Paul has to do stuff or the media will ignore him completely.

Anyway, Bachmann and Romeny's top target now is Perry, sure, but how does them attacking Perry help Paul at all?

Romney should be the tortoise. Paul, Bachmann, and Perry attack either other to death while he sits pretty.

Well, that worked for John Kerry in 2004 when he allowed Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt to tear one another apart in Iowa. Perhaps Bachmann and Perry may do the same thing there this time around?
