To show her support for American workers, President Obama's labor secretary, Hilda Solis, has junked the standard black limo and purchased a new Chevrolet Equinox to ride around Washington in. The problem: the crossover SUV is built and assembled in Canada from parts also made in Canada.

Well, as far as I know, Canada is on the continent called America.

So, a Canadian-built car was made by American workers.
And anyways, the profits all go to rich inhabitants of the United States, so, why Republicans complain?

Ok, any executive who would ride around in a truck suffers from poor taste, which is a much worse offense than hypocrisy.

All such folk should ride around in full-sized, rear wheel drive cars like a Cadillac Fleetwood or Lincoln Town Car.  If such cars are no longer made, then we need to change the legal and policy structure which caused their demise.

I missed the location of the word "to" when I first read it.  so I was really confused:

still sounds like it could be a right-wing talking point.  hence my confusion.

Joke answer: They're the 51st state, totally still counts

Real answer: It's still a US company. Even if the car's made across the border, the profits still go to fund a lot of staff in the US and sales raise the company profits which go to stockholders across the country. Also are any cars truly made in the US these days (genuine question, I don't know).

Also, an argument could easily be made that buying a car that's completely manufactured in Canada helps the US economy (and US workers) more than buying a car that's manufactured overseas but "assembled" in the US, given that much more Canadian workers are involved, and that Canadians import a lot from the US. I don't know where to look up the data for something like this, but it'd definitely be an interesting research question.
