Stupid people piss me off.  ID theft has to be one of the crimes that I hate the most, because the people doing it consciously know (all the time) that they're royally screwing up somebody's life.

Luckily, the charge isn't much, and I actually caught it before it was even taken out of my account (hopefully I can stop it tomorrow before it is), but it's still annoying to have to deal with it.

I've lost about four cards in my time and once I had a bad charge put on there.  Credit card companies deal with this all the time.  It shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I had this happen at the beginning of the month. Someone made two purchases of almost $400 from it. One I was able to cancel from the vendor in time, the other was disputed and my bank has credited me for it while its investigated. Wasn't much of a problem.

that's why I 've never had a debit card...I want my bank account separate from my credit cards in case there is a dispute.

I've been meaning to get a credit card, but my dad keeps saying, "Well what do you need a credit card for?" ... Luckily it was a small amount of money, and the card is now blocked.  But, at least with a credit card, the money wouldn't be leaving my account directly.

Just have to call the credit union tomorrow and see if there's anything I can do to prevent the charge from going through.

Well, here, in Canada, you need to take one someday because if you don't have a credit card, you don't have a credit report and without a credit report, no bank will loan to you.

I don't know if that is the same in the US (I suppose not, considering than many foreclosures were caused by them lending money to people which didn't had the capacity to pay it back), but, it could be an useful argument for you.

To have a credit record, so.

Yeah... I've been wanting to get one to establish some good credit as well.  This is definitely going to be the catalyst to me getting around to doing it.

Ugh. That sucks, Inks.  I've been there before.  A few years ago, I was the victim of an identity theft scam.  The amount was no small amount, either, which I guess was the crooks dumbest move.  I had never charged anything that high. (The amount contained a comma, I'll tell you that much). Thankfully, I was able to get it back and it did propel me to get a credit card.  I had to get a brand new bank account and new debit card, so the aftermath was pretty tedious, but I haven't had any problems since then and that was almost 4 years ago, I believe.

I understand your frustration, but I don't understand why you would call the perpetrators 'stupid'.

Yeah I have a method around that.

It's called "losing my debit card every year and then getting a new one."

Because they're almost certainly going to end up with a felony charge because of it.

Censoring speech on an internet forum won't help you protect your identity.

You mean they mostly get caught?  Well that is sad.

Of course I have never had a 'debit card', but I did have a book of checks taken from my car once, and the people who wrote quite a few checks from that account were of course never caught.  I don't believe anyone made any effort to catch them at all.

A lot of other crimes are crimes of passion.  Obviously murder is the worst, but if you punch somebody, they'll probably be over it in a week.  If you steal from somebody (especially in large quantities), you screw them over for a long time.

In this case, no. But  you'll also get caught as a result, the way banks follow up on this sort of thing with the authorities makes sure of that.
