Let's say that Perry decides to throw his hat in the ring and wins the GOP nomination. Who would be a good choice to accompany Perry on the ticket?

Chris Christie, to balance the ticket geographically.

Marco Rubio for the token minority and "fresh face" aurora.

John Huntsman (assuming he doesn't implode in the primary season) or Scott Brown to appease independents.

He's said several times that he wants to stay a Senator for now, and Christie is waiting for 2016 if Obama wins (no idea if he'd still run if he loses in 2013)

Jindal is good for a younger version of Perry who isn't a total douche, Martinez will help with moderates and Hispanics (though Perry is among the worst candidates for the Hispanic vote), Thune is the safe choice with both youth (not really, but same age as Obama) and experience, and if he wants an old adviser like Cheney and Biden he could go for Orrin Hatch if he loses his primary (the Tea Party will be disappointed, but the president being a Tea Partier like Perry is far more important).

But he did win a lot of "silver medals" in 2008 by his own admission!

Marco Rubio is the answer for every candidate.

Rubio is way too young at 40 years and only one senate term.

Jindal again. Besides his record and experience, he's from Perry's wing of the party, a generation younger, plus his wonkishness and academic credentials mitigate Perry's perceived lightness on policy.

Perry among the worst candidates for the Hispanic vote? He won 38% of Hispanic voters last year. Which is better than GWB in 2000, BTW.

Christie: Has been Shermanesque.

Rubio: Not interested and as a 20-monther would get tagged as a pure ID politics pick.

I could have sworn he was a Jan Brewer clone. Seems that he's conservative on immigration, but not too controversial. Texas Republicans tend to be a little more tolerant of illegal immigration than Arizona Republicans.

Marco Rubio is the answer for every candidate.

^^^^ this.

Obama and Palin have theroughly lowered the bar (Obama favorably, Palin decidedly not so) for the experience threshold to be placed on a major party ticket. Rubio will initially be compared to Palin (a Veep nominee with only 2 years in statewide office), and after one polished (Rubio's nothing if not polished) interview with Katie Couric interspliced by cable analysts with Palin's embarrassing performance 4 years earlier and, presto, Rubio officially becomes a media-certified Serious Candidate.

Figure he'll have to float Bachmann soon if he hopes to pick off her support and if he does he may find it too sticky not to follow through.  The wrinkle is that Palin's endorsement and campaigning would also be a big part of his effort to co-opt Bachmann support and since Palin seems like she feels viscerally threatened by Bachmann's popularity, could be entertaining.

I would say John Ellis, but his family doesn't like Perry anymore.

Brilliant, so was Sarah Palin with one germ as governor, and look how swell that turned out.
The key to VP selection is having someone who has the experience and respect to take over the presidency in an immediate emergency.
To choose Rubio would be pandering to Hispanics, in a desperate attempt; and in doing so, it will make Perry look weak and despearte.
Just like McCain looked desperate to pick a naive Palin.
