The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) applauds President George W. Bush on his nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr., a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, to the position of associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.Judge Alito, whose father immigrated to the United States from Italy, is highly respected in the judicial community for his constitutional knowledge and his impeccable character.President Bush has chosen an individual whose intellect and qualifications are above reproach. We are proud and fortunate that he shares our Italian heritage. Washington, D.C. Oct. 31, 2005.

Yes but I suppose it could be possible that it could also be a vulgarity by coincidence. I have no knowledge of Italian though.

Online translators say 'scalito' means nothing

He got the name in 1992. I think it's like the nick-name "Dubya", used by both supporters and opponents.

Do a Google search for "site:it Scalito".  This searches Italian web sites for the word "Scalito."

All but a small handful of the resulting pages are about Alito.

The National Italian American Foundation's beef is foundationless.

It's a form of "Little Scalia."  Adding an -ito or -ita to the end of Italian words (or Spanish words) generally gives them the "little" connotation.

Also, it's just a merging of the names Scalia and Alito -- works nicely, eh?

Going through the Italian dictionary, the closest variation of "Scalito" that means anything bad is:

Scaltro - adjective meaning "tricky, foxy, sharp"

Closest spelling of all is:

Scalino - noun meaning "step, stair"

According to Babelfish, the terms Scalito and Scalia have no meaning in Italian.

Alito means "breath."
