The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom wasn't officially refereed as "Prime Minister" until early 1900s (if I'm not mistaken, Henry Bannerman-Campbell was the first one to be officially refereed on government documents as such).

I wonder, since the office never was quite created (I love British convention), how were earlier Prime Ministers, since Walpole, refereed to? Not just officially (I think First Lord of the Treasury would apply here), but commonly?

It was First Lord of the Treasury - Prime Minister was essentially a colloquial term that eventually stuck - interestingly, the term doesn't appear in Court precedence papers until Edward VII's reign.
