Why would anyone move there?  There are no jobs, not to mention that cost of living.

My nephew just got a job; $15 an hour. Smiley

Oh god, that's so sad.  I suppose you supplement it with a couple of grand a month, or he still lives in your pool-house.

Nope. That would not be good for him, and I love him dearly.  His welfare is job one for me. I also don't approve of your little stipend actually. In my trust and will, there are no stipends. I have seen all too often in my career how destructive that can be. And as I said, I never asked my Dad for a dime after I graduated from Law School. It would have been dishonorable. JMO.

Those must have been some long, cold winters.

No, but my nephew does in fact give really good phone. I have seen how he gets folks to just lap his stuff up. Smiley  But then between film and acting, and fantasy, and on and on, all the world is a stage or something.

And yet as the AR and MS results have shown, people are also leaving the traditional areas of rural black poverty. (LA is a bit of a trickier case in terms of long-term trends because of the hurricane).

Metro Atlanta is going to be interesting.

The concept of 'honor' in the system in which you participate is rather ironic, of course, Torie, but your idea that is acceptable to receive the largess of privileged parents up until 27 or whatever age one completes study, but not after, is surely nitpicking.   The point being that your father already gave you everything by providing your easy way though school, your elite upbringing, etc.  To pretend that after all that, waltzing automatically into an upper-middle-class job, that you are suddenly a independent, hard working, self-starter - 'your own man' - is comically un-selfaware and vain.

Better to honestly recognize the nature of our bloodsucking system, and appreciate one's advantage, without claiming any pathetically obvious pretense of 'deserving' it.  Its a far more honorable position because it is intellectually honest and quite self-deprecating.  But I suppose that's what separates the upper-middle from the upper class.

(Personally I find the only thing to disapprove about my stipend is that it is far too small - I mean really, why produce an offspring only to condemn it to toils?)

Opebo, in order to perhaps refresh your recollection as to the matter broached by your bolded text above, you might want to re-read my penultimate paragraph in this post Opebo. I am going to resist a bit any attempt to caricature me as some sort of un-self-aware rich (whether such status arises from the assets/income stream being on the personal balance sheet now - or as an expectancy), with a sense of self-entitlement and a misapprehension that it was all about me, and my personal efforts. That portrait just might more closely fit a couple of posters of other posters on this site, rather than myself come to think of it. Tongue

In point of fact, I am well aware that I was fortunate - very fortunate. I was dealt a very good hand by being sired by whom I was sired, and being raised by whom I was raised, and I know it. I actually made that point at my mother's memorial service yesterday in fact. It was she who gave me my love of words - she had a large and very active vocabulary, obviously acquired from reading a lot before she went blind, at which time that, and her athletic endeavors, largely came to a sad end, about age 40 or so. And that is just for starters.

I hope this gives you a bit better understanding of my mindset. Thanks.

Oh one other thought crosses my mind. Toil is what in large part has given my life meaning. Without toil, I would have been a lost soul.

Everybody is moving South. Who can afford to live in the North?
