Republicans hold a majority of seats in the legislature, and Gov. Heineman supports switching to WTA.

So I was right after all. Recently I said that they would prevent EV-splitting from happening again, either by redrawing the CDs or returning to WTA.

EV splitting does increase the power of gerrymandering.

Besides that, I don't really care, Obama won't be winning or loosing the election because of Nebraska.

This whole thing is stupid. They should of replaced it with WTA years ago.

I actually think the Nebraska/Maine model should be national.

Pathetic that they're changing the law to deny Obama an electoral vote, but in general awarding electors by Congressional district is a terrible idea.

Even if this bill doesn't pass, I'm sure the legislature will try to make the district as conservative as possible so that Obama still can't win it.

And in the end, it probably won't even matter, because it's highly unlikely that the election will be decided by one electoral vote. Gaming the system for one measly electoral vote is a big waste of time.

Approve if it's considered the alternative to dismantling the Omaha CD.

I doubt Obama would have won the Omaha CD again anyway, but looks like they don't want to even worry about the chance.

I hope this passes, Palin gets the nomination, and Obama wins Nebraska at large.

Why did they pass the current system anyway if they didn't want their electoral votes split?

Nebraska used to be an ignored safe state, so they passed it hoping to get more attention from candidates. Then once the system does that they switch back. Kind of amusing really.

The Electoral College either needs to be completely abolished or reformed like my scenario here:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=60832.0

If it were expanded to 1000 and apportioned relative to population size, it would make the national popular vote winner the President, not a fake President like George W. Bush.

Nice idea, the original reason to overrepresent small states (colonies fighting over political power), is not nearly as important now.  Unfortunately, I don't think either your idea or abolishing the electoral college will be happening anytime soon.

Amen, and amen.

Eh, pretty standard really. I mean, they're just conforming to how almost every other state awards their electors, for the same partisan reasons. IIRC the legislators that pushed this in the first place were registered Democrats who presumably had the same partisan motivations dressed up as good government.

As if increasing the power of gerrymandering was ever a good idea to begin with....

What we need to do is get rid of the electoral college altogether.
