Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup dangerous ? I sincerely have no idea, for the simple reason I didn't know about its existence.

It "enlargens" certain parts of the body you might say.

A reasonable concern, necessitating a fine scapel, so our friend bgwah brings the hackshaw blade. Tongue

High Fructose Corn Syrup is not hazzardous to your health. It does however like most anything become a very bad thing if consumed to excess. So before we create civil panic lets atleast make sure the warning label is worded properly. Such as, "Heavy consumption of this item can turn you into a fat slob putting you at risk of diabetes, heart attacks....."

I proposed a bill sort of like this a while ago, but we failed to find anything outside of one study providing evidence that it's more harmful than sugar. Until that is proven, I doubt this is necessary unless we want to put warning for everything on all foods, which is a bit nanny statist for me. The contents are already listed on foods; I see no need to put "caution, these cookies are high in sugar/corn syrup!"

In much of Europe it's generally called "Glucose-Fructose Syrup" or sometimes "isoglucose", because it's made with starches besides corn. You might recognize one of those names. If not, here's the French wiki article for you! Smiley

Note, everyone, that I doubt HFCS is that much of a problem in Atlasia- it's so prevalent in the US because of our outrageous corn subsidies and the tariffs on sugar, neither of which exist in Atlasia.

To be honest, I agree with my conservative colleagues that such a measure is nanny-statist, and I believe the intention is misdirected here.

The reason corn syrup has made it into so much of our processed foods is because corn grows readily in the Atlasian climate.  The problem is, however, the energy inputs needed (mainly from oil) to make corn yields high enough in order to ensure prices low enough for current HFCS usage rates is very high, and with the rising price of oil, things will come to a head.

It might be better to pass environmental protection legislation that works to restore our soil since corn is very nutrient intensive and depletes our farmland soils and use fewer hydrocarbon derived chemicals as pesticides and herbicides.  I believe we could make the green revolution greener while ensuring everybody has a full stomach.

Corn, and its related sorghum syrup have always had their uses as a relatively cheap sweetening agent in many traditions of Altasian Smiley cookery (pecan pie being perhaps the most famous).  The fact that nearly everything we eat outside of fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts has a corn product of some kind in it just shows how much we have come to over rely on one crop.  Diversity is good in nearly everything... including our diets.

Meh, seems really to be the kind of things which I have no clue of. Tongue Anyways, I agree with other Senators that the proposed legislation seems, at best, excessive.

Since debate on this bill has lasted the required 72 hours and no debate has occurred for at least 24 hours, I motion to bring this bill to a vote.

Senators, please vote aye, nay, or abstain.

Aye

Oh well, this is the final vote ? LOL, I thought it was the cloture vote. Tongue

I'd have apreciated an amendment, because I sympathize with the purpose of this bill. However, as I said previously, in its current form the bill is excessive.

Damn, I'd never had thought it would be so close. I feel guilty for not proposing an Amendment... Sad
