Trump isn't as wealthy as people make him out to be.  He has made some very bad  investments.

Uh...in like 1992.  He's rich as anything and was even then.  When you own as much real estate in NYC as he does, you're automatically top .5% EASILY.

Try top 0.01%. But he isn't as fabulously wealthy as he is often claimed to be, just high-profile. And even recently he's had a lot of setbacks (the loss of Riverside South in 2005, the recent failure of the Trump SoHo Hotel, etc.), more than your average real estate mogul. He takes huge risks and gets burned a lot.

A-Bob,

I hope you are right.  I hope Trump takes 15-20% of Romney's vote in new Hampshire.  that pretty much turns New Hampshire into a toss-up with Palin.

Tell me how Trump can do it and guys like Tim pawlenty, mitch daniels.  Why would someone vote for trump when you can vote for another somewhat moderate person like Pawlenty, Daniels, or Rudy?

I'm sure someone who is pro-gay rights, pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-universal healthcare, anti-free trade and anti-war has a great chance at winning the Republican Nomination in 2012.

Anti-free trade is at least a popular position among GOP primary voters, something like 61% of the Teabaggers oppose it. And the party is less obsessed with war lately although he's certainly indicated he'd be willing to bomb Iran before so it's not like that would be as much of an issue... Not that issues really matter half as much as people think they do on this board for some reason.

With that said I would still prefer him to someone like Palin, Romney or Thune.

12%?

Realistically, we're talking 1-2% at most in any state.

The only Republicans in 2008 to never reach at least 15% in any state were Duncan Hunter and Alan Keyes.

So you want Obama's re-election?

And Hunter never got over 2% in the polls really, Trump says he's looking at very good numbers. And Keyes got over 15% in a few states in 2000 so... it would be impossible for Trump to be in the running at nothing pound

Oh please, no one here seriously thinks he has a chance. But it'll be hilarious. It's the perfect thing to spice up this otherwise painfully boring anticipation.

Well, those two plus all those candidates who dropped out before the primaries started.

I think most of his money is tied up in real estate, so he has very low liquid funds.  Also, depending on his salary structure, those properties are likely owned by a corporation that he controls, so his personal worth is less.

Still, running for president would be a great ego boost and accomplishment before he is old and it would be a great publicity boost for his branding, tv shows, and speaking fees.  Basically its the Palin business model of leveraging politics into a TV show and millions of dollars.  Just as long as Trump doesn't hurt his branding by looking dumber than Palin or Trump committing some huge scandal like insider trading (Frist) or adultery (been there done that), running for president is a great business move!

He won't win, but it will be fun for him.  Also, the NY media will love him and go easy on him.

A friend just messaged me about this. He said Trump claimed there is an 80% chance that he'll be running and confirmed what we already know: he'd be running as a Republican.
