I personally have an interest in the law, and have a lot of ideas on reforming the country, and I am a Democrat. However, I kind of feel cynical--I feel like only people with family connections or who come from an affluent family can become anything major in our politics today. If one were to want to get involved with politics, what would be a good first step?

You want to be a Democratic politician?

Get a law degree.

That is true for both parties. Lawyers will always dominate politics - always. I could go into the reasons why if anyone is interested. Well, the need to have a huge net worth these days to win federal office (which is more and more true with each ensuing election), may be truncating that "law" of politics a bit now, I must admit.

If you don't want to have influence through wealth there are other paths. One way is go get involved at the local level though a candidate or volunteer board of some sort. It's a slow path to gain influence, but if you are hardworking and patient it can lead to more political activity.

You would have been a great lawyer Muon2, but alas your IQ was (and is) a bit too high. When it pushes 140 and above, the law becomes just a bit too boring and prosaic for the hyper-kinetic mind.  Choosing the legal path may well have turned you into a pothead just for compensating purposes. Smiley

That's kind of the path I later want to take in a few years, but with the Republican Party. However, I also want to be the $ guy.

Be very rich. Tongue

muon2 is right though in all seriousness. Volunteering is a great experience and also, it's a lot of fun to be involved in a campaign.
