Hey, it looks like some Democrats did flee the country after Bush won. Wink
There's always been an American presence in Frankfurt, at least since 1945. In fact there were always US army and air force members stationed here, with the last leaving just a couple months ago. But they, and their family members (unless these family members were German citizens, which o/c happened all the time), were never included in the official city population statistics.
Much of the American population, and the British and French and Japanese population, and no doubt the Dutch and Swiss population too, is people working in international finance, and not staying longer than a couple of years.

Myself, I was mostly surprised at the large Polish figure. That must have really skyrocketed in the past years. Notice that this is citizenship, not ethnic origin or place of birth (and thanks to Germany's fascistic citizenship laws you're not automatically a German citizen just for being born here) or mother tongue or anything, so if you'd go by ... say ... place of birth of parents you'd find much larger populations of Moroccans and Afghans and Iranians and Ethiopians and Eritreans (groups that have been getting themselves German passports at record rates) and vastly larger populations from Poland and former USSR countries (where most immigrants are technically ethnic Germans, and get citizenship easily), with Turks and Greeks also having above-average rates of getting nationalized - while Italians and former Yugoslavia people tend to cling to the citizenship of the old country tenaciously.

Groups listed here where I can't recall ever meeting a Frankfurt resident from there (independent of citizenship) - Ukrainian, Dutch, South Korean, Hungarian, Brazilian, Filipino, Swiss, Czech
Countries that I do know or have known Frankfurt people from that aren't even listed - Dominican Republic, Peru, Chile, Finland, Albania (although most "Albanians" in Germany are technically Serbs, ie Kosovars), Georgia, Iraq, Palestinians (may be of just about any citizenship, or quite frequently none at all. Actually I think there are probably over 400 people of "none or unclear" citizenship in those 11,000 missing, well over half of them Palestinians, the source just didn't list it.), Egypt, Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo(-Brazzaville), South Africa, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand.

Well technically mine is probably more so...95% White means 30,000 Africans and East Asians after all...but that's just irrelevant...

Percentage without a German passport about 25. Percentage with a non-German passport about 34.

That's pretty high.  Does it feel cosmopolitan, or just like a mix of different kinds of people, or does it just feel normal to you?

Well, let's see how much has changed in five years!
Number of persons of this nationality, who are not also citizens of Germany, and who have been living in Frankfurt at least 3 months, and who are over 18 years of age, on November 27th, 2005
Now with late 2010 figures for comparison.

Turkish 25,800         25,887
Italian 11,981          11,821
Croat 11,013            10,686
Serbian 10,067         8362   !
Polish 6,650              8550  *
Greek 6,066              5407
Moroccan 5,611        5269
Bosnian 4,467          4362
Spanish 4,341          4040
Portuguese 3,011     3026
American 2,986         2596
French 2,834             2870
Austrian 2,455          2375
British 2,324             2303
Indian 2,148             2398
Russian 1,940           2172
Afghan 1,898             1753
Iranian 1,877             1599 !
Japanese 1,840         2129
Chinese 1,665           2053  *
Ukrainian 1,613         1738
Romanian 1,436         2536  *
Pakistani 1,135          1147
Macedonian 1,096      1049
Thai 1,084                  1157
Bulgarian 908              2439 *
Dutch 899                    974
Ethiopian 880               933
Eritrean 852                1123  *
Colombian 688             669
South Korean 683        880  *
Hungarian 682             942  *
Brazilian 657                711
Srilankan 629
Lithuanian 585             770
Filipino 572
Swiss 571
Czech 563                    588
Slovenian 540
Tunesian 528               625
Vietnamese 508           748  *
Israeli 474
Ghanaian 469
Slovakian 445
Irish 443

2005: Figures under 400 withheld. The total was 141,022 though, so all other nationalities were 11,108.
2010: Other groups not listed, not sure what the cutoff was (the bottom of the page, apparently). The total was 144,421, leaving 15,667 for other nationalities.
I wonder how they're dealing with the Kosovars - maybe listed as unknown (and that left off due to sloppyness)? Would certainly explain the drop in the number of Serbians.
Elsewhere, stagnant or dropping figures are clearly due to more people getting German citizenship than are coming into the country.

Ottawa is 20.18% non-white.

includingL
4.87% black
3.84% Chinese
3.31% South Asian
3.01% Arab

and also 14.91% Francophone

Amusingly, in the US most of these (and probably the Arabs) would be classified as White, thus denoting lack of diversity.

Edit: spelling

The US Census does record ethnicity as well as race. Or did until 2010, anyway, then it was accused of being too intrusive.

Yeah, I know.

And of course, as far as the western Europeans on that list go we'd agree over here (many of those Swiss or British or Americans are just working here for a couple of years in the finance industry).

But remember that this isn't about ancestry, but about noncitizen residents. (Which the US Census also records; the sample version).

Such numbers from LA or NYC would be awesome - the most diverse cities on this planet I suspect.

IIRC that's Toronto, followed by NYC, then London.

FWIW, Melbourne is a bit over a third foreign-born, a bit under half total non-anglo-celtic. Can't remember the exact figures, but it's something like 35/48.
