To cover-up, yes.

No big deal compared to all the other things both sides were doing.

Absolutely. It would have been a huge scandal even if he had admitted it, and rightfully so. Honestly, I think he should have been prosecuted.

He had absolutely nothing to do with it, so saying it would have been a huge scandal is laughable.

Breaking into your opponent's headquarters is nothing. They both did and do all kinds of crap.

When did the democrats break into the republican headquarters? And yes he had something to do with it. It is not clear exactly how involved he was but we do know he was covering something up by erasing that 18 minutes of tape

In February 1972 Democratic Operatives burned down the "Nixon 1972" Campaign Headquarters in Pheonix, Arizona, but that's a different topic.

If Nixon had just fessed up to knowing about it and then appologised he would of survived his presidency all 8 years.

I agree but instead he lied to us. I am not saying this because I am a crazy left-wing nut......Nixon was one of my favorite presidents, but he WAS A CROOK. If he had been open about the scandal Ford would have been elected in 76, I guarentee it. I just could not vote for anyone associated with that kind of corruption, and many other americans felt the same way. I must admit though, Bush is making Nixon look honest Smiley

Nixon was worried because there was alot of pus in the Bay of Pigs situation, which some including Oliver Stone believe was a code word for the JFK assasination.

In his book, Bob Handleman also stated that he believed that "Bay of Pigs" was Nixon's code word for the Kennedy assassination Below is a partial transcript of the "smoking gun" tape, recorded in the Oval Office on June 23, 1972.

Nixon:   When you get in these people when you...get these people in, say: "Look, the problem is that this will open the whole, the whole Bay of Pigs thing, and the President just feels that" ah, without going into the details... don't, don't lie to them to the extent to say there is no involvement, but just say this is sort of a comedy of errors, bizarre, without getting into it, "the President believes that it is going to open the whole Bay of Pigs thing up again. And, ah because these people are plugging for, for keeps and that they should call the FBI in and say that we wish for the country, don't go any further into this case", period!

Of course "Bay of Pigs" is referring to the JFK assasination. The Warren commission was a joke.

It could be a codeword for the JFK assasination, but I think we are looking into it a little too much. I think it is much simpler. Bay of Pigs was just a name for one of the early ideas for a cover-up. Nixon was informed by Haldeman that McCord would say that he was working with the Cubans, who had been putting in the bug (in the headquarters) for their own political reasons and that he would also say that Hunt’s involvement in the Bay of Pigs operation while in the CIA, is why he is in the address books of those at the break-in. Hell all five of those who broke into the headquarters had Cuban ties. It would keep the blame contained and prevent it from leaking higher up in the chain of command.

Watergate was the least of America's worries about Nixon.  I've listened to the majority of the "tapes".  He was a very smart man but clearly showed some mental and psychological defects.  He would just go on rants about Jews, commies and gays etc.  He also displayed paranoia.  Knowing what I know now I wouldn't be too comfortable with this guy having the launch codes.  I don't think he was a bad man but he was pretty crazy.
