Hmm, a racist big government New Deal FDR Democrat. At least he was consistent in his views, thoroughly awful.

When the Republicans took back the majority in the Senate in 1947, Robert Taft organized a campaign that ultimately prevented Bilbo from ever taking his seat for a third term, on the charge that he had been elected by intimidating black voters.

Even if every black voter voted he'd still of won, he was the only one on the ballet.

Vote fraud is vote fraud even if the candidate would have won without it.

I thought you like Southern Democrats, especially a loyal FDR man like Theodore Bilbo?

The racism, and all the votes associated with it, negate his support of the New Deal.

The first few times I saw "would of", I thought it was intentional. I didn't realize anyone actually spelled "would have" like that.

I wouldn't have voted for Thurmond (I'd have stuck with Thomas), but SPC is entitled to make his own decisions. It is a bit understandable considering how thoroughly horrid the other candidates were in 1948, and it's not like Thurmond stood any chance of winning. Likewise, George Wallace was the "peace" candidate compared to Nixon and Humphrey in 1968, despite being awful on just about every other issue.

Despite his support for the New Deal, utter HP.

The primary was contested, however and was rather competitive:
