It really doesn't make any sense. I'm not sure what he's trying to imply. It's as pointless as me saying "so-called "conservatives"".

He thinks that moving left is 'moving back', because he's some kind of Randian lad who thinks leftism is like feudalism or some such nonsense.

Why doesn't he just use progressive as an insult like Glenn Beck because teh commies used it a long time ago.

Since liberals have retreated from that term after conservatives successfully tarred it, they have now adopted 'progressive' instead.  Cinyc is simply giving it the same treatment.

It's just another of the insidious word games popular among the right.  See 'Democrat Party', for another example.

Because, obviously, cinyc thinks that "so-called 'progressives'" are, in fact, regressive.

Not sure which word I like more, liberal or progressive. The CW is that liberal entered lingual retreat because of conservative tarring, and that may be right. But 'liberal' also originally was used to distinguish its followers from communism and socialism, not conservatism. In the 1920s and 30s, if you were a leftist, it was assumed that you were a communist, socialist, or some other kind of revolutionary. Then during the New Deal, some leftists who accepted the New Deal started calling themselves liberals, to signify their embrace of liberal democracy, which was saved by FDR, over communism or fascism. Thus the major groupings were communist, fascist, and liberal. By that standard everyone today would be liberal. After 1945 liberalism became totally dominant until the 1950s, when a new group of reactionaries called themselves conservatives to distinguish themselves from the liberals. Hence liberalism suggests a soft, mushy centrism. It's adoption by the left was never meant as an alternative to conservatism in the first place.

It's what you get for describing yourselves with a buzzword.  It would be like if conservatives suddenly started calling themselves "happyfunnists."  Don't say you wouldn't put scare quotes around that - see, I just did!

I was going to say the same. It seems pretty obvious. However, take a closer look at what BRTD actually wrote. He's noting that cinyc puts "so-called' in quotes as well which doesn't make sense.

No he doesn't, I just did that to note that it's a quote. He only puts "progressive" in quotes. But as JohnnyLongtorso noted, all that does is make him look like a douchebag.

Because progressivism is regressive, rather than what the name would imply.

Oh, ok. Well then it's obvious that he does it because he thinks they're regressive.

That allows me to agree with him and say that Lula is a "socialist". Not a socialist, but a "socialist".

Whether the term is fitting for economic issues is certainly debatable, but on social issues there really isn't much to dispute.

One would prefer that the opposition characterize itself with a word that has a negative connotation, rather than a positive one. It is not very difficult really. The end.

By the way, my "ideology" is pragmatism.  If anyone calls me a "so-called pragmatist," I will kick their ass. Smiley
