One night in 1984 at a Rites of Spring show, some guy in the crowd yelled out "You guys are f**king emo!" basically making a joke about how they were far more emotional than all other bands in the DC hardcore scene. Word about this got around and the word "emo" had been created, though for awhile the term was "emocore" until the late 80s.

So in other words some random guy in a crowd in 1984 invented the term. Does he remember this today? He's probably around mid-40s to early 50s now. You know it would be pretty cool if this was Torie or muon though I doubt either lived near DC in 1984.

Torie would have been like 32. I doubt there were many people over 30 at Rites of Spring shows.

Ah, good point. How things change. Today they often make up over a quarter of the crowd and there are probably more people over 30 in "the scene" then there are under 20.
