The CDC has released final 2009 birth and death data for every state on Friday.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr58/nvsr58_25.pdf

Iīve created this chart and map to compare births in each state between 2000 and 2009 as well as birth rates and population changes.

First the chart (copy the URL and open a new tab to see the big chart):

As you can see, VT is now the only state with a birth rate of less than 10 per 1000 inhabitants.

Also: Michigan's population increased during the decade according to the Census Bureau, but its births dropped by about 14% ...

Now the map:

Green indicates a state in which the birth rate (which is births per 1000 inhabitants) and the total number of births did increase between 2000 and 2009.

Red indicates a state in which the birth rate and the total number of births did decrease between 2000 and 2009.

Yellow indicates a state in which the birth rate did decrease, but the total number of births did increase between 2000 and 2009.

...

Any reasons why the Plain states could increase their birth rates this decade ?

Their economies changed resulting in people other than olds living there.

Indeed, that could be the most important factor. Take a look here:

Colorado, which had also strong growth this decade, saw the birth rate drop by about 1.5.

Probably Colorado is out of line, because the 90s were already CO's best decade.

Hereīs an interesting fact for the upcoming Census figures:

In the 90s, there were 39.860 Mio. births from 1990 to 1999 and 22.711 Mio. deaths.

Thatīs a natural increase of 17.149 Mio. for the decade.

This decade, there were 41.416 Mio. births from 2000 to 2009 and 24.285 Mio. deaths.

Thatīs a natural increase of 17.131 Mio. for the decade.

In the 90s, there were 9.775 Mio. Green card recipients.

This decade, there were 10.299 Mio. Green card recipients.

...

Considering these figures, we could assume that the growth this decade was almost the same like in the 90s, if emigration was also the same.

Interesting stuff. Tender, do you have TFR (total fertility rate) data for the states as well?
