I voted neutral.

The President of Nicaragua is not the nicest man.  Compared to the Somozas, however, Daniel Ortega is Mother Teresa.  The Sandinistas were a major improvement for ordinary Nicaraguans, and the country would have been far better off had the Reagan administration minded its own f**k*ng business.  Today, Ortega is the mostly inconsequential democratically-elected leader of Nicaragua.  He may be a little nuisance the the US, but he is a well-deserved nuisance, considering what Reagan did to Nicaragua.

At worst, Daniel Ortega is one of Central America's milder strongmen; he is a strongman who cares about the needy.  The US-back Somoza dictators were the Assads of the region.  If Ortega's continued prominence in Nicaraguan politics serves as a poke in the eye for Oliver North, then good.

A strongman who did relinquish the power after being defeated in 1990.

Just a little note.

Horrible person nowadays. The Sandinista revolution was something and the Reagan administration, plenty of the anti communist fervor of the Cold War. Reagan condemned the country to a decade of hazardous existence between the devastation of the war. Policy only lightly less horrible than the Nixon-Kissinger doctrine executed in Chile. Nevertheless, since some time ago is publicly known that Ortega is a corrupt asshole thirsty for power, ready to compromise with anyone, including corrupt conservative ex-presidents like Arnoldo Alemán. There are still idealists in the FSLN, but I would never vote to what these initials represent today.

I'd argue the Reaganist terror in Nicaragua was worse than Chile.  in the sense that Nixon probably never (had to) pull a trigger.

HP, a strongman and rumored child molester. He did give up power as Kal noted, which was a good thing.

Ortega, Chavez, Correa and Morales all have the same fundamental characteristics, except that in Chavez the bad aspects outweighed the good ones, while in Correa and Morales the good ones clearly prevailed. Not sure about Ortega, but I fear he falls more on the Chavez side of the spectrum.

Still far better than the Contras and the bloody dictators that wreaked havoc in Nicaragua at different points in time, of course.

Ortega was a literal FF, but he was also a child molester and later became an authoritarian ruler. So he was both a FF and a HP.

Ortega was a literal FF, but he was also a paedophile and later became an authoritarian ruler. So he was both a FF and a HP.

I'm sure the pedophile nonsense was just that - smearing by the right-wing media.

Okay, perhaps not paedophile. But certainly a child molester. His adopted stepdaughter Zoilamérica Narváez released a 48-page report in 1998 describing how Ortega had systematically sexually abused her from when she was 11. Her description was very credible, it was only because Ortega was an MP and the 5 year statue of limitation was exceeded that it didn't go to court.

I think one ought to believe the victim in such a case unless there is a good reason not to, and there wasn't. Child abuse is rampant in macho Nicaragua.
