Right so this is something I find very intresting and slightly strange. How come that so many gay people are really anti gay-rights and homophobic before they come out of the closet?

I mean, even before I came out I supported gay-rights. I didn't prech about it or anything, or instantly voice my support when people expressed anti-gay views, but neither did I pretend to be extreamly anti-homosexuality.

And it's not like I grew up in a really liberal area where everybody was ok with gay rights. My grandma compared homosexuality to pedophelia, class mates said gay people should be locked away in mental hospitals... and so on and so on.

So why do you think a lot of gay guys and girls do this? I'd be especially curious to hear what some of the posters here that themselves have been in the situation think.

Because they don't want people to think they're gay and they think that being militantly anti-gay will end speculation.

There was a French film about this subject. I never forgot the line: "you hate gays because you're a latent one", or whatever it was.

Because supporting gay rights means you're gay.

Really, it draws suspicion on the person. And I guess they believe that's unwanted attention.

This was never me. Even before I knew I wasn't straight I backed gay rights. I remember being 9 or 10 and having no problem with a kid in my neighborhood who said he was gay.

I imagine some hyper-ambitious pol, possibly in a conservative district, whose entire Republican career depends on not being gay would face some additional pressures! Smiley

The first openly gay man elected to federal office as a freshman, rather than incumbent who switched public orientations after he was elected,  assumed office in 2009

And I think those people are really sick. You know you have this huge secret that would destroy your life if it got out and what do you do? You run for public office.

No, no, no, it only has a chance of ruining your public life IF you run for office.  Smiley  Which they then do
