Of course, you'll attempt to rationalize anything the Obama regime tries to do.

Any time an administration acts against its own interests and putative philosophies, it's worth taking a critical look as to why.
This administration is acting in it's own interests, as always. Obama has never really cared about the environment.

BRTD's argument makes some sense, but it's still an incredibly bad move PR-wise.

I haven't read any of it, but I scanned and saw 'Moonies'.   I definitely wouldn't believe anything the right-wing press states (and by that I mean all press).

This post made me lol for some reason.

I'm still confused.  I can take the most cynical approach in the world, that Obama wants to appease pro-whaling interests, but it still doesn't make sense, as those interests are so incredibly myopic and the environmental outcry is far more widespread.  If you want to piss off the environmental community about the same, while gaining industry cred, why not back Murkowski's anti-carbon regulation bill?   There's no PAC money to earn for your preferred candidates by pushing in pro-whaling legislation...

Why this, at a time when the gulf waters are being destroyed, nevertheless?

I'm so confused.

someone explain this to me in political terms

As an Illinois legislator, Obama was known for work primarily in health care policy as well as in ethics, welfare, and criminal code reform. While he supported environmental legislation, it was not as high a priority compared to these other areas. It would seem that as President, a similar pattern of priorities persists.

I don't know if that alleviates your confusion, but that's perhaps a simplified view of what may be happening.

Seems like he pledged to do otherwise: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/06/05/obama-backing-deal-lift-global-ban-commercial-whaling/

And yes, the Obama administration has a legitimate argument, but realistically, is this what they want to do right now?

I'm getting the impression that Obama wants to lose in 2012 by a bigger margin than McGovern and Mondale.
