Obviously the interim will be GOP since Romney appoints him/her, but who would likely run/win?

Many of the Congressmen have indicated an interest in running, including Marty Meehan and Barney Frank.  The GOP would obviously hope that Bill Weld ran.

And does the Governor actually appoint someone to serve a couple months under the new law, or is the seat just vacant until the special election?

1-The veto-proof Dem legislature has said they'd block any Romney appointments, instead they require a special election instead
2-Weld lives in NY now. There's no one else in the GOP who can win the seat. I say it belongs Frank. Meehan wants to kick Romney out.

There will be a special election.

Romney can run without giving up his governorship.  Weld set the precedent.  Massachusetts Law -- yes, I have a copy of the relevent MGL five feet from here -- is very precise on this, and there is no difficulty with his running.

If enough Democrats slaughter each other in the primary, Romney may win.

Ah, I really don't think we're going to need the possibility, but Weld.  A lot of times this type of thing prompts a party switch.

Romney won't run for the Senate seat; he will firm up his position to prepare for reelection and then the 2008 GOP primaries.

It would probably be Meehan or Markey; I would tend to give the latter a slight edge, though Meehan has more cash on hand I believe.

Then again, it's not going to matter, since Kerry isn't going to leave his Senate seat. Though he could retire in 2008.

Ted Kennedy - he's big enough for both seats! Ha!

Well I though it was funny...
