An article from the CBC, just 'cause I needed an article.

Now, the fact that Bellemare comes out with this sh**t (and judging by his actions recently, he really hates Charest) 6 years after his resignation is a bit fishy, but it's well known that the PLQ-Charest have always had good links with the construction business and the largely Italian mafia, which runs the provincial construction business. Such scandals in the construction business and construction trade unions (FTQ, largely) have been coming out for a while. Charest's been linked to those cases for a long time, but this one is a big one.

Charest called a public investigation into the judicial nominations scandal, but did not touch on the PLQ financing scandal and the construction, the two dominant issues.

On the positive side, this likely kills Charest's federal ambitions and kills PLQ chances at winning a fourth term (though the election is in 2012 or something). A Leger poll on April 8 shows the PQ leading voting intentions with 40, against 30 for the Liberals, 10 for the ADQ, 9 for QS and 8 for the Greenies. 77% disapprove of Charest (and 74% disapprove of Harpy).

That article is from two days ago, and already it's got nastier, with (a) Bellemare filing a formal complaint with the police and (b) Charest personally suing Bellemare today for defamation.

But at least the following is no longer true, with former SC judge Bastarache appointed to look into it.
Charest has resisted repeated calls for a public inquiry into the accusations.

The informal "one SC judge from the minority on each linguistic side" can get a bit silly with the affirmative action for west Montreal and Acadian federal court judges, but it's handy when what you're investigating is the Quebec judges, but you still need a Francophone judge. Tongue

I thought John abandoned his federal ambitions when the Tories went kaboom. Interesting.

In the US, corporations can legally buy elections (thanks to the 5 members of SCOTUS that either appointed Bush or were appointed by him) , so this wouldn't be news here.

Rumors were saying he wanted to be the successor of Harper in the Conservative Party.

That would be great. Too bad he won't.

Charest's ultimate ambition is to be Prime Minister of Canada. My mom knows somebody who worked for the PLQ, and that was what was being said (and the fact that he's on Prozac).

But at least the following is no longer true, with former SC judge Bastarache appointed to look into it.
Charest has resisted repeated calls for a public inquiry into the accusations.

It's still half true. Bastarache will only look into judicial nominations, which is largely the non-issue, and ignore the construction corruption and party financing. Also, a Liberal organizer admitted yesterday that he had called the government to put in a word about his son, who is now a judge.

In the US, corporations can legally buy elections (thanks to the 5 members of SCOTUS that either appointed Bush or were appointed by him) , so this wouldn't be news here.

go away, kthx.

Hahaha. Maybe the Greens will manage a breakthrough as the party of disgruntled Anglophones.

Yes, they hold Mercier.

And are only even slightly significant in two other seats (Gouin and Sainte-Marie--Saint-Jacques). An amusing little outfit.

In those central Montreal-Plateau areas, they're the hippie sovereignist movement. The Greenies are too Anglo or too unclear on the independence issue to do very well there. Their land is NDG, which is the middle-class hippie but not sovereignist version of the Plateau. The ADQ's results in all those places are a big fat 'lol'.
