If Kerry was President, things would not remain the same.

I've often wondered about this scenario. Assuming the economy still tanks, I wonder if the recession would be blamed on Kerry or if it would help win over McCain.

If Kerry were the incumbent president overseeing the financial collapse, forget it, it wouldn't even be close. A massive GOP blowout.

Yeah, I think McCain would win in this scenario. If Kerry won he would've lost the popular vote, while an absolute majority of voters voted for Bush. Conservatives would've been just as outraged at Kerry, if not more, than they are at Obama now. They'd attack Kerry at every move he made, and maybe, just maybe, a Tea Party movement would've started four years earlier. Actually if Bush lost in 2004 I could see him pulling a Grover Cleveland and running in 2008.

Since everything else stays the same, Kerry drops Edwards from his ticket after Edwards's affair is discovered. Kerry then picks Florida Senator Bill Nelson in Edwards's place. McCain picks Lamar Alexander as his VP.
