Not what I was talking about - which was UKIP's legitimacy - though I may or may not agree with the statement depending on my mood at the time and the viciousness of the particular non-open racist in question (they'd have to be far worse than the average UKIP voter to make me agree irrespective of mood, of course).

The Communist Party was a topdown organization banning open discussion, with very little recognizable trace of the worldview it was named for. And (thanks to it) virtually nobody used "Communist" in the ideological sense, making the comparison with "racist" a non-starter. (I mean, irrespective of the content of the worldviews in question.)

I really don't think so. I know people who know UKIPers and I certainly haven't gotten the impression that they're closet racists.

I have to agree with Hashemite that UKIP is the BNP for respectable people. Of course it's better than the BNP in no uncertain terms. The BNP is avowedly racist and has a direct historical connection to neo-Nazi movements such as the National Front of the 1970s and 1980s. So, to answer the question, UKIP is not worse than the BNP.
