If Tom Campbell is the nominee, he should run stronger in that neck of the woods than most statewide GOP candidates. However, that is not the point. The point is that folks in San Mateo County are mad as hell at the Obama administration, because his treasury secretary refused to use TARP funds to bail them out for their feckless over investment (including many local school districts) in Lehman Bros bonds. The consequence is mass public employee layoffs, slashing courses off the schedule in local junior colleges, and general all around "discommodement." Of course, San Mateo should not be bailed our for being so dumb as to have an inadequately diversified investment portfolio, but heck, greed begins at home!

Anyway, the money quote in the WSJ article published today is:

"Much of the anger in San Mateo is directed at the Obama administration and, specifically, at Timothy Geithner, the Treasury secretary. Mr. Geithner has declined to use funds from the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, to bail out municipalities.

"'There's too big to fail, and we're too small for them to care,' says Mary McMillan, the county's deputy manager."

Campbell would certainly do much better in the bay area than other candidates but I'm not sure if that would be enough for him to win San Mateo county against Boxer. Maybe the governor's race but not for senate. I sure as hell hope he doesn't win since he would become just a pawn of the national republicans.

Boxer will most likely not lose San Mateo County. She won it last time around with 70% of the vote. The county even voted against Arnold in 2006. It is possible for her to go below 60% in the county against Campbell, but I don't see her losing unless a scandal comes out involving her which is on Dodd like proportions. Campbell should probably invest voting efforts in Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano counties since those are the most moderate in the Bay Area at the moment.  However if Campbell wins and proves to be an excellent senator, than I could see San Mateo voting for him in a reelection bid.

My boyfriend has family in Napa. Boxer won't lose Napa, she could lose Solano against Campbell if she's not careful.

Non-issue.

San Mateo County won't go Republican except in a Schwarzeneggeresque victory, and no Republican will get that. Campbell would do better than most, but the base will nominate a real Republican.

She broke 70% in it last time. Not going to happen. Even Angelides won it.

Actually considering how incompetent Fiorina is, even the CA gop primary crowd will get a clue and vote for Campbell. He won't get a majority, sure, but the crazy vote will be split between Fiorina and Devore. This coming senate election could be very, very close.

Core constituencies rarely party-hop, so I'm guessing no.

I do hope she loses, though.

My money's on DeVore. The base is quite insane.
