I am posting this in the Forum Community folder, but if it belongs elsewhere...let me know and I will lock it.  Or a mod can move it.

I ask it here because this has to do with how we relate to each other.

The words "partisan" and "hack" get tossed around a lot.  And they are often married to each other.  ie: "partisan hack".  I think that's fine, but...

Can one be a partisan, and not a hack?

Can one be a hack, and not particularly partisan?

How do you define and differentiate the three terms -- "partisan", "hack" and "partisan hack"?

I am certain I am a partisan, in that I almost always favor the Democratic party over the Republican.  I might also be a hack, but I think what people mean by that involves stubborn intransigence despite all the facts -- ie -- certainty that Mondale is going to win 45 states and that this "Reagan thing" is just a fluke.

Help me out here...

I think someone can be any combination.  A partisan person breaks down every issue to a party issue.  A hack always boosts one side, party or candidate, regardless of reason.  A partisan hack always backs specifically their party first and foremost.

Aye on both issues. "Partisan hack" is not a composite noun, but "partisan" is an adjective related to "hack" to qualify it better : a "partisan hack" is a sort of hack, like an "ideological hack" (JewCon, for example, was firstly a conservative and only a republican by default).
And as for american politics, I'm extremely partisan but don't consider myself a hack.
