Johnson Does not Run-1964

Despite attempts to convince President Johnson to run, Johnson declines due to Poor health conditions, and a desire to return to the senate. “I didn’t want to be here to begin with, I was going to resign to run for the Senate before Kennedy was shot”.

With this bombshell, the race is wide open, with no president or vice president running for the first time since the 1928 election. There are no clear favorites for the two party’s nomination; also the candidates must fight for delegates. Primaries are instrumented for the first time in all 50 states.

Also, a surprise is the third party candidate Barry Goldwater, who announced his intentions to run before any other Candidate. He is not expected to win, however it is projected that he will take away republican votes, enough to give Democrats the victory.
But the republicans are trying to prove this wrong.

Let’s Skip to January 1964:

Democratic Primary Candidates:

Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota
Governor George Wallace of Alabama
Governor Pat Brown of California
Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri

Republican Prmiary Canidates:

Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York
Governor George A. Romney of Michigan
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Mass
Governor Harold Stassen

Humphrey 1964!!!! He should be able to win, considering that the economy was in good shape and that the U.S. was not involved in any unpopular foreign wars (does LBJ still escalate the Vietnam War with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution?).

No Johnson does nothing to escalate Vietnam, he is focused on keeping the domestic side in the right track, while running his senate campaign.

Bobby is running for the NY senate seat as in RL. Ted is in the senate, running for re-election.

BTW: Johnson's senate contest is special election forhis old seat against John Tower. The other Texas senate election is between Ralph Yarborough and George H.W. Bush.

Not every state had primaries back then, and they were MUCH less influential with regards to determining the nominee. Continue, nonetheless.

Yes but I don't see how the POD of President Johnson not running would make Republicans and Democrats suddenly make electoral reforms 10 years earlier.

The party chairmen released that with no incumbent running, times for reforms are needed, and the primary systems are created.

That's not a very detailed answer. The then current party leaders would want nothing to do with primaries, they didn't want to loose any power. I also don't see how LBJ not running would effect the Republican primaries at all. You would need a radical change in party leadership to get reforms made this early.

Well, you needed messy 1968 Democratic nomination contest to create McGovern/Fraser commission and push the reform, Republicans later followed.

So party leaders in 1964 just decided "hey, it would be cool idea".

Epic fail, dude, again.

For poiting a lack of sense in nationwide primaries in 1964?

You better get comfortable with criticism and suggestions. That is how "what-if" board works. I received also many criticism and advices in my TL, but I either ignores or uses it.
