What elections can you think of that have really awkward/surprising coalitions?

1960 Presidential Election had some Southern populists aligned with the elitist New England liberals.

I like elections where left and right align against the center. It is interesting to see coalitions develop that are completely unexpected. For example, in 1904, the reformers and the conservatives all supported Theodore Roosevelt.

The New Deal Coalition as a whole is odd. Just try to find common ground between more than 2 constituencies on a single issue, it's almost impossible.

For that election in particular? Probably not. Carter was more conservative than Ford.

1976: West Virginia and Texas going Democrat, California and Vermont going Republican.  My how the times have changed!  In comparison to 2008, 1976 shows how awkward today's Republican alignment of western conservatism with southern populism is.  This leads to perhaps the oddest coupling: high-income white secular elites with low-income religious minorities in today's Democratic alignment.
