Coming from a poster named Alexander Hamilton?  I am SHOCKED.

But yeah, I find it difficult to disagree.

I don't think any American has had his historical legacy so malformed.  Imagine if our opinion of George Washington was formed soley from the diaries of fervent Republicans or the pages of the Aurora; no other scholarship was done.

The duel is a matter in which hardly anyone has even bothered to examine anything other than the accounts of Hamilton partisans.  I'm not going to get bogged down in a debate over that with someone who has likely never even touched alternative testimony or evidence.

Essentially, Burr was a proto-Democrat (of the Jacksonian style).  This highly disturbed both Federalists and Jeffersonians.  The former never trusted him and the latter used him until he masterfully delivered New York, and after 1800 ruthlessly used federal patronage to undermine his support among New York Republicans.  Despite his massive contributions to the nation in the Revolutionary War and beyond, he was forsaken by men in power on every side, with no way to politically rectify the situation.

His progressive views were numerous; he viewed women as equals (and applied it to politics and the way he treated his wife and daughter), in New York he empowered the common people in politics (which wouldn't be done nationally until the Jacksonian era), and his law career was marked for his defense of the impoverished and helpless.

Good person. Adhered to 17th-century ideas of honor, though.

Alexander Hamilton was asking for it, enough said. What dumbass comes to a duel with the idea not to shoot his opponent? Plus, the man was a semi statist, so IMO Burr is no ass.

The idea that he didn't want to shoot is ridiculous.

The concept of throwing one's shot is not ridiculous.  However, Burr wasn't able to discern, by his and others accounts, exactly what Hamilton's intentions were.  Hamilton didn't exactly throw the shot perpendicularly, Burr attested that it whizzed over his head; he assumed Hamilton had merely missed his shot and had been aiming to kill.

As far as I'm aware, Aaron Burr never owned slaves and was an abolitionist. Hamilton did own slaves. As did Washington, Jefferson etc.
