I haven't heard any discussion of The Ohio Plan, which if implemented could be a huge factor in determining the 2012 Republican nominee.

For those who don't know, it's a plan to reorganize the Republican primary calendar. It's not official yet (as far as I know), so details are fluid, but the main ideas, as I can remember them, were:

Give a small number of states special early status, including IA, NH and SC.

Hold primaries in the 15-20 smallest states second, all on the same day.

Group the remaining bigger states into 3 groups and rotate their positions each cycle.

Penalize states which break the rules with a 1/2 reduction in delegates.

I think it's a great idea, but I doubt it will happen.

States in blue are the early states that will vote first, states in orange are the small states that will vote second, states in green, purple and gold are the large states that will vote either third, fourth or fifth, rotating every election cycle.

Wow, that's a surprisingly small number of small states. Where do these divisions come from? I'm sure that if negotiations get under way the exact delineations will be up for discussion, so who's proposal is this?

This would be perfect for Romney. The only states Huckabee could beat him at are possibly Iowa, South Carolina, West Virginia, and maybe Nebraska. The rest would go to Romney. It would be best for yellow to go second, and purple to go third, just to seal the deal. Romney would do decent in green, but there is Texas in there, where Huckabee would probably narrowly win.

Dumb plan, obviously.

I don't see it being implemented, because of opposition from certain states.

Nothing has been decided yet.  The RNC has simply formed a committee to study possible changes to the primary calendar (of which the Ohio Plan would be one option), and the committee hasn't actually done anything yet:

http://frontloading.blogspot.com/2009/05/gop-temporary-delegate-selection.html

Penalize states which break the rules with a 1/2 reduction in delegates.

This is why the plan wouldn't actually do anything meaningful.  States don't care about 50% reductions in delegates.  NH, SC, and FL all had 50% reductions in delegates last year, and McCain's wins in those states won him the nomination.  A 50% reduction isn't going to deter any state from going early.  The only meaningful penalty would be a 100% reduction in delegates, as the DNC gave FL and MI last year.  But the RNC has never expressed any interest in doing that, so don't expect the primary calendar to change.

If Republicans were smart they'd hold their primaries in states that they need on election day.  You start out with New Hampshire and Nevada and then you go to Missouri, Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana.  That way Republican will have sufficiently campaigned in states that they should be winning instead of having to go on defense throughout the entire general election.  Do you know how much campaign resources McCain/Palin had to spend defending states like Georgia, NC,SC, Virgina, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota and Montana?  They were giving up swing states just to defend Republican strongholds.

The Dakotas, Puerto Rico, and New Mexico. Remember Huckster is popular among hispanics. Although I completely agree that this would favour Romney most likely.

Can anyone explain to me why IA, NH, and SC have to go first?

They would say that they are very dedicated and practiced at really putting candidates' feet to the fire, and preform a national service due to the high quality of scrutiny that comes from months of focus on their states.

A Sewer Socialist post without any grammatical or spelling errors? When did we go through the worm hole to the alternate universe?

I think it's dumb.

Gives huge advantage to the western states really that tend to vote all the same way and care about the exact same issues. We'd just be electing a nominee each time that cared about farms farms farms.

It should be random, that way it's very dynamic and diverse.
