I haven't looked at this story...but I'm certain the candidates were allowed to write notes during the debate, which requires that they have paper and a pen.  So what is the controversy about?
From Drudge

"Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:

"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."

So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?"

It also says that the campaigns can't use video of the debate. Bush has some ad with video of the debate.

I don't think so, if you're talking about the commerical on "global test" that's not from the debate although they picked something close.  BTW: If they did, I'd have the same reaction; disgusting.

I think they just took a clip of Kerry from a different debate

I saw Bush write something down too, towards the end of the debate--in preparation for one of his responses.

I will say it again, the candidates were allowed to have a pen and paper waiting for them at the podium so they could write things down.

Maybe already mentioned, but it seems that Bush also pulls something out of his pocket. Look closely.

Here are the Pictures of the Bush note conspiracy.  I hope we can let the whole thing die now.

Hilliarous. Good job. It's so funny how the people were obsessed with Kerry pulling out a pen and taking the cap off (or maybe notes, but the motion is unclear, in the video at least) that they ignored the more obvious note evidence of Bush.

I knew it!  Kerry used illegal Olay Daily Facials to wipe off his fake tan!  hehehe

I am assuming you are talking about whatever it was that he pulled out of his pocket when his stood behind the podium.  I can't tell if that is just a pen, or pen and paper (the image is too small on my screen).

For the last time:  candidates were allowed to write notes.  It is in the rules.  It has been mentioned by me and others.  Read the rules of the debate.

You must be logged in to read this quote.

Since you have demonstrated on repeated occasions a lack of reading comprehension skills, whether through improper education or willful neglect, I will put it in as simple of terms as possible.

Writing notes=allowed
Having pen and paper waiting for you at the podium=allowed
Pulling pen out of pocket= not allowed

If these exceedingly simple concepts continue to elude you, please spend less time here and more time in remedial education.

Thank you.
